Back ground: Curanderismo is a ancient art form that is found in all parts of the world and some say it's origins comes from the Moors in Africa. When the Spaniards came to the Americas, they brought & shared their knowledge of energy work. However, energy work was not new to the indigenous people already living in the Americans. In many ways, their understanding of healing modalities superseded the Spaniards. The meeting of two very different cultures & understandings gave birth to Curanderismo.

What is Curanderismo?
Definition:
"Curanderismo is a form of folk healing that includes various techniques such as prayer, herbal medicine, healing rituals, spiritualism, massage, and psychic healing. It is a system of traditional beliefs that are common in Hispanic-American communities, particularly in the southwestern United States". Curanderismo - American Cancer Society How is it practiced?
Curanderismo is practices in a variety of way. Practitioners are unique to their training, specializations and regions in which the training was earned. Types of Practitioners: Practitioner of Curanderismo are categorized as : Coach/Consular/Platicadora- One Who Knows Herbalist/ Yerbera- One who works with herbs. Massage Therapist/Sobadoras/Hiesera- One who works with the skeleton and muscular systems. Through manipulations, massage and other remedies. There are several books written about Curanderismo. I would recommend reading everything from Eliseo Cheo Torres, and Elena Avila to get a good understand of the history, culture and how the energy work is practiced. |
